Hutovo Blato Nature Park

A nature bird reserve located in the South-Western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, near Croatian board. This unusual kind of marshlands is home to over 240 types of migratory birds and dozens that make their permanent home in the sub-Mediterranean wetlands. In the migration season, tens of thousands of birds fill the Deransko Lake and its surroundings. The reserve is on the list of BirdLife International's Important Bird Areas and a member of the Network of Adriatic Parks and Wetland of international importance, under the International Ramsar Convention. Historical site, Old Fortress Hutovo Blato, is located in the area of Nature Park.

Traditional cooking - fresh, simple and delicious traditional food:

  • Local homemade products traditional in Herzegovina: cheese, bacon and well known prosciutto smoked with aromatic woods and dried in a cold wind, red wine, brandy (schnapps), vegetables, fruit, olives, …
  • Fresh and tasty breakfast on request with homemade products: freshly baked bread, sausage, bacon, milk, coffe, tea, fresh eggs, cheese, prosciutto, vegetables, fruit.
  • Meals can be prepared in different ways: on the grill, in a big fireplace, on a skewer in traditional way with various seasonal vegetables.
  • The best known and tastiest are definitely meals under baking lid covered with ashes in a big fireplace, locally called sac (satch/sač). Bread, lamb or veal with potatoes made in this way are absolutely delicious. Another tasty traditional meal is green cabbage cooked with smoked ribs.
  • By request the host can make suckling lamb or pork on spit. A red wine and homemade spirits (rakija) with various herbs for better digestion.

Recommended one-day trips:

  • Neum – Adriatic coast (10 km) – Neum is only seaside town in Bosnia and Hercegovina (only 20 km of coastline) and the country's only access to the Adriatic Sea. It has steep hills, sandy beaches, and several large tourist hotels. With its long and warm summers, and short and mild winters, Neum is considered to be one of the coastal towns which has the greatest number of sunny days in the year.
  • Dubrovnik (70 km/ one hour drive) – with its distinctive Old Town - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - encircled with massive stone walls completed in the 16th century. The Stradun or Placa - the city's main street, wich runs straight across the Old Town, was constructed in the 12th century by filling the channel with earth. In 1468 it was paved with limestone.
  • Mostar (78 km) – beautiful city on the Neretva river named after “the bridge keepers” (natively: mostari) who kept the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over Neretva. The famous bridge was built during the Ottoman era and became one of the symbols of Mostar. A narrow staircase leads up to the Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque’s minaret for panoramic city views. Mostar is the biggest and the most important city in the Herzegovina region.
  • Hutovo Blato Nature Park (40 km) - a nature bird reserve located in the South-Western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, near Croatian board. It is home to over 240 types of migratory birds.  Activities in the park: sport-fishing, cycling and main tourist attraction – photo safari. There is also an educational path providing information of park and for rising environmental awareness and need for preservation of natural heritage in Nature park "Hutovo Blato".
  • Villa Mogorjelo (45 km/ one hour drive) - is a Roman villa rustica that dates from the early fourth century. It is situated on a hill over the Neretva branch, 5 km south of city Čapljina. This monument is among the most beautiful constructions of the late antique architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina and declared national monument protected by the state. It is surrounded by a beautiful park. Nearby is a horse farm and riding club.
