After an hour bike ride, mostly along the Sava Bohinjka River, we arrive in small village Ribčev Laz, next to the magnificent alpine jewel – Lake Bohinj. On the edge of the village you will be treated to a breathtaking view over the lake. In a beautiful clear green/blue water you can see fishes swimming through the water. The Lake Bohinj has two other highlights: the Church of St. John the Baptist - a masterpiece of carniolan church architecture and together with the old stone bridge a popular motive for taking photos. Another highlight is the Monument to four couragoeus men – a memorial to the first ascent to Mount Triglav in 1778.
We continue to bike along Mostnica stream to the village Stara Fužina. The stream Mostnica flows into the River Sava Bohinjka, creating on its path beautiful waterfalls and rapids. The Devil's Bridge over the steep Mostnica gorge, built in the 18th century, is an impressive piece of work. The view down the bridge is not for everyone. The bridge got its name from a folk legend about which you can hear from our guide.
We are returning to Bohinjska Bistrica around 2:00 PM. During this excursion you will also have the opportunity to see authentic and welcoming villages with characteristic alpine architecture. Lake Bohinj is located in the middle of the Triglav National Park. It is the best-kept secret of Europe and a "must-see" in Slovenia. The largest natural lake in Slovenia, best known for its stone bridge and the Church of St. John the Baptist. We also recommend a beautiful circular walk around Lake Bohinj.
Monument to four courageous men is a memorial to the first ascent to Mount Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain (2,864 m), made by a group of four local men (one doctor, one hunter and two miners) in 1778. In those times a near-impossible feat. A monument in their honour graces the knoll near the Bohinj Lake. It was erected in 1978 on the 200th anniversary of the first ascent.
Church of St. John the Baptist (Cerkev Sv. Janeza Krstnika), built-in 1742, is a masterpiece of Carniolan church architecture and a memorable medieval building with beautiful frescos. Although dated to 1742, a dwelling place had been there since the 10th century. Together with an old stone bridge, the church forms a unique composition and perfectly fits in the hills of the Julian Alps mountain range in the background. A very popular motive for tourist photos.
Mostnica Gorge and Devil's Bridge - Mostnica River is an Alpine stream with gorges, waterfalls and rapids, that flows from the Voje valley to Stara Fužina village. Especially interesting is a hollow rock that got the name 'Little Elephant' since it emerged when the water broke through a rock. The Devil's Bridge is a demanding construction work over the steep Mostnica gorge. It was built in the 18th century to transport of iron ore and charcoal from the surrounding hills. The bridge got its name from a folk legend that you can hear from our guide.
Village Studor is well-known for double hayracks at the village entrance and the museum 'Oplen house' - an old house with a black kitchen. In the village, there is a ranch with Icelandic horses. Although the hayracks (Slovene: kozolec) are a practical structure for feeding animals, they are often artistically designed and handcrafted and regarded as a distinctive form of vernacular architecture that marks Slovenian identity.
