This great adventure in the southeast of Bosnia is especially made for people who dislike standard mass tourism, boring guides and the beaten paths.

In the heart of Sutjeska National Park you will find places where you can enjoy the adventure of quietness, vastness and intact nature: primeval forest, mountain plateau at almost 1.700 metres, glacier lake - those are just some highlights of this fascinating hiking trip.

The next day is scheduled for a wildwater rafting. Surrounded by an impressive river scenery, a white-water rafting tour along the Tara River is a unique experience. The canyon is a second largest in the world, after the Colorado River canyon.

Arrival in Sarajevo

Day 1 - Arrival in Sarajevo

Upon arrival in Sarajevo, transfer to the accommodation, with the possibility to do a city tour with the private guide or another leisure time activity, depending on the time of arrival. Accommodation: Bed & Breakfast. Optional offer: dinner in a Bosnian traditional restaurant.

Day 2 - Hiking in Sutjeska National Park – Lake Trnovacko

After breakfast in the accommodation, we leave Sarajevo 08:00AM and take a transfer toward southeast Bosnia, in direction of Foča town. The whole day we will spend in the Sutjeska National Park. After two hours drive, we will arrive to the 1.200 meter deep Sutjeska River canyon. Here is the starting point for this superb hiking tour which takes you first to the Viewpoint Dragos Saddle (Dragoš Sedlo) and then to the Skakavac waterfall deep in Perucica’s valley. We will walk around the thick primeval forest Perucica that hides a number of endemic and rare species. From here we are hiking on to Prijevor - the mountain plateau at 1.668 meters above sea level, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the National Park Sutjeska. Great place to take a picture of the mountains Maglic, Zelengora and Volujak which will tower around us. At the edge of the primeval forest Perucica we descend towards the Glacier Lake Trnovacko, which is set at 1.500 meters surrounded by impressive mountain peaks of Maglic, Bioč and Volujak. Depending on the weather, there is a possibility for swimming (only for the very fit). The lake is an ideal place for having lunch, relax and enjoy the serenity of the Bosnian mountains. After lunch we head back to civilization, enjoying the soft colours of the setting sun above Zelengora and Maglic, Bosnia’s highest mountains. Overnight stay at simple wooden bungalows next to the Tara river, enjoying the sound of water and campfire. Accommodation: Bungalows (with bedding). Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Tara River Rafting Tour

Day 3 - Tara River Rafting Tour

After breakfast, we are going to explore the canyon of the wild and untamed beauty of the Tara River - a second largest in the world, after the Colorado River canyon. Tara River is the one of the four whitewater rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina that offers professionally guided rafting tours. It ranks among Europe’s best for class II – IV. Our skippers from Highlander team are certified by the International Rafting Federation. On our rafting tour you will experience stunning wilderness and unforgettable landscapes. The river follows the border with Montenegro and is 140 kilometers long. The 1.300 meter deep canyon has created some of the best adrenaline-pumping water sports experiences in this part of Europe with a long tradition, including rafting, kayaking and canyoning, but also easy family outings that can accommodate a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. After rafting and homemade lunch, we will be transferred back to Sarajevo. Return time around 19:00PM. Accommodation: Bed & Breakfast. Meals: breakfast, lunch. Optional offer: dinner in a Bosnian traditional restaurant.

You need to bring:

For hiking: Hiking boots recommended/Sturdy walking shoes, pocket knife, sun glasses, sun cream, 1,5 liter of water, personal hygiene kit, fleece/jumper, rain gear, towel, change of clothes (e.g. dry socks, T-shirt & underwear, trousers), 30 to 40 liter backpack.

For rafting: T-shirt, swimming costume, sneakers or sandals for in the water, flash light, 1 liter of water, hat, sun block, towel, change of clothes (warm sweater or jacket because night by the river could be fresher), camera.

  1. The stunning surroundings of the Sutjeska National Park - located near Foca town in the southeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Established in 1962, it is Bosnia and Herzegovina's oldest national park which extends over an area of about 175 km2. Over 66% of the area is covered by forests, and the rest are pastures, meadows and barren land above the upper limit of forests. It includes the highest peak of Maglić at over 2.386 metres (7.828 ft), on the border with Montenegro. The Sutjeska National Park is also famous as being the location of the famous Battle of the Sutjeska in 1943 during World War II. The park is an affiliated member of EUROPARC Federation.
  2. The strictly protected Nature Reserve -  the primeval forest “Perućica” in the Sutjeska National Park, located along the border with Montenegro. The one of the last two remaining primeval forests and one of the last beech old growth forests in Europe. It stretches over an area of 1.434 hectares and is a precious European natural heritage. The forest hides many trees over 300 years old, and the primeval forest's vintage is stated to be 20.000 years. The tallest measured Norway Spruce (63 m) is located in this forest. The number of wild animals is impressive: bears, wolves, foxes, chamois, marten, wild cat, wild boar and many others.
  3. Prijevor - the mountain plateau at 1.668 meters above sea level is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the National Park Sutjeska. Surrounded on all sides by mountain giants of over 2.000 metres, such as Maglic, Volujak, Snjeznica and Zelengora, and leaning on one of the last jungle in Europe, Perucica ... It offers a wide choice of herbs, mountain blueberries and rich flora with some rare and endemic species.
  4. Glacier Lake Trnovacko (Montenegro) – located at the foot of the Mountain Maglić, 1.517 meters above sea level, completely surrounded by high mountain ranges with peaks over 2.000 m. The average temperature of the lake during the summer months is pleasant 20°C, ideal for swimming and refreshing or fishing (you need a permit).
  5. Rafting on the Tara River through the deepest and the longest canyon in Europe, and the second biggest in the world (after the Colorado River canyon). The Tara River canyon is the part of the Durmitor National Park in Montenegro which is under UNESCO protection.
