Hiking in Sutjeska National Park – Lake Trnovačko

Day 2 - Hiking in Sutjeska National Park – Lake Trnovačko

After breakfast, we leave Sarajevo at 8:00 AM and take a transfer toward southeast Bosnia, in the direction of the town of Foča. We will spend the whole day in the Sutjeska National Park. After two hours drive, we will arrive at the 1,200-meter-deep Sutjeska River canyon. Here is the starting point for this superb hiking tour. It takes you first to the Viewpoint Dragos Saddle (Dragoš Sedlo) and then deep into Perućica Valley to the Skakavac waterfall. We will walk around the thick primaeval forest Perućica which hides many endemic and rare species. Our hiking tour continues to the Prijevor mountain plateau at 1.668 meters above sea level. It is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the National Park Sutjeska and a great place to take a picture of the surrounding mountains Maglić, Zelengora and Volujak. At the edge of the primaeval forest Perućica, we descend towards the Glacier Lake Trnovačko, which is set at 1.500 meters above sea level, surrounded by the Bosnian impressive mountain peaks of Maglić, Bioč, and Volujak. Depending on the weather, there is a possibility of swimming in the lake (swimmers should be in good physical shape because of very cold water). Lake Trnovačko is ideal for lunch, relaxing and enjoying the Bosnian mountains' serenity. After lunch, we head back to our accommodation for dinner. Accommodation: Simple wooden bungalows (with bedding) next to the Tara River. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Tara River Canyon Rafting Tour

Day 3 - Tara River Canyon Rafting Tour

After breakfast, we are going to explore the 1,300-meter-deep Tara River Canyon, the second largest in the world after the Colorado River Canyon. The Tara River is one of the four whitewater rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina that offers professionally guided rafting tours. It ranks among Europe’s best whitewater rafting rivers in class II-IV. The last 18 kilometres of the river, before rivers Piva and Tara merge into a strong and mighty Drina River, is the most exciting part, with more than 20 rapids. Our skippers are experienced rafting guides certified by the International Rafting Federation. After rafting and enjoying a homemade lunch, we will be transferred back to Sarajevo. The return time is around 7:00 PM. Accommodation: Bed & Breakfast. Meals: breakfast, lunch. Optional offer: dinner in a Bosnian traditional restaurant.

  1. The stunning surroundings of the Sutjeska National Park - located near the town of Foca in the southeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Established in 1962, it is Bosnia and Herzegovina's oldest national park, extending over about 175 km2. Over 66% of the area is forested. The rest are pastures, meadows and barren land above the upper limit of forests. It includes the highest peak of Maglić at over 2.386 metres (7.828 ft), on the border with Montenegro. The Sutjeska National Park is also famous for being the location of the famous Battle of the Sutjeska in 1943 during World War II. The park is an affiliated member of the EUROPARC Federation.
  2. The strictly protected Nature Reserve -  the primaeval forest Perućica in the Sutjeska National Park, is located along the border with Montenegro. It is one of the last two remaining European primaeval forests and beech-old-growth forests. It stays there just as nature created it 20.000 years ago. The ancient Bosnian forest Perućica stretches over 1.434 hectares and is a precious European natural heritage. It hides many trees over 300 years old. The tallest measured Norway Spruce (63 m) is located in this forest. The number of wild animals is impressive: bears, wolves, foxes, chamois, marten, wild cats, wild boar, and many others.
  3. Prijevor - the mountain plateau at 1.668 meters above sea level is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the National Park Sutjeska. Surrounded by mountain giants of over 2.000 metres, such as Maglić, Volujak, Snježnica and Zelengora, and leaning on one of the last jungles in Europe, Perućica ... It offers a wide choice of herbs, mountain blueberries and rich flora with some rare and endemic species.
  4. Glacier Lake Trnovačko (Montenegro) – located at the foot of the Mountain Maglić, 1.517 meters above sea level, surrounded by high mountain ranges with peaks over 2.000 m. The average lake temperature during the summer is pleasant at 20°C, ideal for swimming and refreshing or fishing (you need a permit).
  5. Tara River Canyon is, with its 1.300 meters, the deepest and the longest canyon in Europe and the second biggest in the world (the first one is the Colorado River Canyon). It is a part of the Durmitor National Park in Montenegro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The destination offers some of the best adrenaline-pumping water sports experiences in this part of Europe. It has a long tradition of rafting, kayaking, canyoning tours and family excursions.
