The Alpine Dairy Farming Museum in Stara Fužina presents the story of herding and alpine dairy farming in Bohinj as a way of life and coexistence with nature in an alpine environment. It has a small collection related to Alpine dairy farming. The museum was once a cheese dairy itself. It features four rooms showcasing a reconstructed 1849 shepherd’s hut, historical photographs, and numerous original cheesemaking tools, including cheese presses, wooden butter moulds, and copper vats. Life on the Bohinj mountain pastures is presented through various artefacts that reveal a wealth of ethnological heritage in the Bohinj region.
Cheese production in Bohinjis one of the oldest and most culturally significant alpine dairy traditions in Slovenia, known especially for Bohinj cheese, Mohant, and the summer‑pasture cheesemaking that still follows centuries‑old methods. It remains a living tradition today, practiced on mountain pastures and in local dairies, and is a major part of Bohinj’s identity.
The village of Studor in Bohinj is best known for its impressive double hayracks, a unique architectural feature that greets visitors at the village entrance. Studor is also home to the Oplen House Museum, a beautifully preserved traditional farmhouse with an original black kitchen that offers insight into rural life in Slovenia. Nearby, a local ranch breeds Icelandic horses, adding to the village’s charm and appeal. Although hayracks, known as kozolci in Slovene, were originally built for drying and storing hay, their artistic craftsmanship has made them an iconic element of Slovenian vernacular architecture and a symbol of national identity.
