B&B Winery Sontacchi

Kutjevo Winery with a long tradition

Its history dates back to 1900 when Tomaso Sontacchi started to work as a vineyard estate manager at a remarkable estate in the Kutjevo wine-growing region in Eastern Croatia. Rich in tradition, the Winery Sontacchi is renowned for the quality of its wines. Some grape varieties are Graševina, Muller Thurgau, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Portugieser.

The winery, which is also a guesthouse, is located in the centre of Kutjevo - the wine capital of Continental Croatia, at Graševina square. It promotes viticulture that respects the environment and maintains biological diversity in the vineyard ecosystem and surrounding area. It offers wine-tasting rooms where guests can sample a selection of fine wines and learn about winemaking. Wines are fermented and maturated in stainless steel vats and Slavonian oak barrels.

Except for their excellent white wine Graševina and red wine Pinot Noir, the most famous is their legendary red cuveé named „Kitokret“ - their own wine brand.

To find out more about other wines and wine-growing landscapes of the renowned Kutjevo region in Western Slavonia, we recommend wine tours by bicycle. A B&B Winery Sontacchi is the perfect starting point. On the way, you will discover why Slavonians are the most cheerful and hospitable people in Inland Croatia.

The people say : "In Kutjevo is easy to get into, but hard to get out ..."

Going around for sightseeing in the Golden Valley of Požega county or just relaxing in the spacious courtyard or on a terrace overlooking the city of Kutjevo.

Recommended one-day trips:

  • Wine roads with numerous wine cellars in the Pozega Valley (also called “Golden Valley”), especially the internationally award-winning wines of the wine region Kutjevo.
  • Trip to Nature Park Papuk (UNESCO Global Geopark ) and its Mountain Lodge Jankovac, a 20 km drive through the wood.
  • Adrenalin Park Duboka in the town of Velika, Nature Park Papuk.
  • Trip to the old baroque city of Pozega, just 23 km away. Požega itself is a monument of baroque architecture built in the Middle Ages.
  • Visiting medieval Fort Kaptol Old town, Požega's Monument to the Plague (to commemorate Pozega’s plague victims in 1749), …
  • Hiking and educational trails.
  • Numerous cycling trails and organized wine tours.
  • Paragliding in the Nature Park Papuk, on the hill Pliš.

Požega Valley, also known as Golden Valley

This fertile valley has been important since antiquity. Its Roman name was Vallis Aurea, meaning "golden valley". The valley is formed by the Slavonian mountains of Požeška Gora, Psunj, Papuk, Krndija and Dilj. Thanks to its protected position, no other county in Slavonia has more sights preserved than Požega Valley. Archaeological sites, old towns, churches, fortresses, etc. all can be found in or around the Golden Valley.

UNESCO Geopark Papuk is absolutely the crown jewel of all-natural beauties in Western Slavonia. Because of the exceptional geological heritage of its mountains Papuk and Krndija the Papuk Geopark is among 120 official UNESCO Global Geoparks around the world. The Nature Park Papuk is only 20 km away from the Winery Sonttachi. You can spend a night there. We recommend the Mountain Lodge Jankovac, located in the protected park-forest Jankovac and close to the waterfall Skakavac (the highest waterfall in Slavonia). There are numerous educational, bicycle and mountaineering paths, several lookouts, an equestrian trail, and natural, cultural and historical attractions.
