Thanks to its richly contrasting topography and many themed cycle routes Idrija region is just made for cyclists. Its hills, rivers and forests offer a rich selection of cyclling trails for every profile, from the easy plains for families with children to the demanding routes for more experienced bikers.

The routes are taking place next to many natural and cultural attractions. They follow quiet country roads, dirt roads and trails on the Ledine, Vojsko and Crni Vrh plateaus.

Some recommendable marked cycling trails, suitable for mountain and touring bikes:

  1. Along Bloudek paths: 58 km; difficulty: easy to intermediate, across the plateau of Crni Vrh full of karst phenomena like caves and sinkholes. Interesting sights along the way: Lake Divje jezero, Landscape Park Zgornja Idrijca, the remains of Roman limes in Zidise, the fortified borders of the Roman empire.
  2. Contraband Trail at the Ledine plateau: 45 km, difficulty: easy to intermediate. Interesting sights along the way: etnological collection of old farming tools at the farm Pr'Jurec & Ledinska jama cave.
  3. Across the Plateau of Vojsko: 35km, difficulty: easy to very hard. Interesting sights along the way: Slovenia's Partisan printing shop, ravine of the creek Gacnik, Partisan burial ground at Vojscica, the remains of Roman limes in Drvise, the fortified borders of the Roman empire, the nature reserve - the hilltop Bukov Vrh, the Landscape park Zgornja Idrijca.
  4. Trail into the heart of the Idrija forest in the Landscape park Zgornja Idrijca: 78 km, difficulty: easy to intermediate. On the way you pass Klavže (water barriers – also known as the Slovenian Pyramids), the Lake Divje jezero, Smrekova draga cold hollow, ice cave Paradana and the ancient forest Bukov Vrh.

The cycling trails are linked to each other, and in one day you can ride several trails and adapt routes to your cycling skills and fitness level. The downhill cyclists find excitement in the Javornik Bike Park with “freeride” and downhill programmes. Only 50 km from Ljubljana away.

Cycling information

The Idrija region is also a centre of cultural and technical heritage entered on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Cycling through the Idrija UNESCO Global Geopark and Zgornja Idrijca Landscape Park is an additional adventure because of numerous natural sights.

Please note that cycling off – road or off – track is not allowed anywhere in Slovenia. It is also recommended that you use a cycling helmet. If you have left your bicycle at home, you can rent oneon spot or through Inlandia.
