Highlights in the area (with the distance from Villa Anri):

  • The Old Town of Mostar is a beautiful city on the Neretva River named after “the bridge keepers” (natively: mostari) who kept the famous Old Bridge (Stari Most) over Neretva. The bridge was built during the Ottoman era and became one of the symbols of Mostar. A narrow staircase leads up to the Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque’s minaret for panoramic city views. Mostar is the biggest and the most significant city in the Herzegovina region.
  • Blagaj and Dervish Tekija (13 km) is situated on the cliffs above the spring of the Buna River, one of the largest and most beautiful karst springs in Europe. It represents the perfect harmony of nature and Bosnian architecture. The Dervish is an Islamic religious person who chooses asceticism and focuses on universal values such as love and servicing others. The term “Tekija” generally refers to a monastery or dervish house. Tekijas emerged in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the arrival of Islam in the 15th century. The Dervish Tekija in Blagaj was built around 1520. Other attractions in the area are the Old Town of Herceg Stjepan, the ruler of Herzegovina, and the Green Cave – a paleontological nature monument from ca. 4200 B.C.
  • Medjugorje (28 km) is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in this part of Europe. The town provides a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can climb two famous hills located there (the name Medjugorje means 'place between two hills'): 1. Podbrdo Hill - the place of the first alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje in 1981 (20-minute walk); 2. Križevac - the place where the first foundation of the Medjugorje pilgrimage story took place. Namely, on its top, the parishioners erected a large concrete 8.56-meter-high cross back in 1934. The hill got its name from the cross (križ means cross). People from all over the world come to Medjugorje to relax, meditate and pray.
  • Počitelj (30 km) - nestling in the valley of the Neretva River, this national monument is one of the most beautiful cultural and historic units in Herzegovina. The fortress of Pocitelj (15th century) had a significant role in the defence during the war against the Ottoman Empire. The oriental-Mediterranean architecture of this beautiful medieval town has been preserved for future generations as a valuable historical heritage..
